Letter to the Editor of The Leitrim Observer, Thursday 20th January 2020: Pictures of decades old IRA Graffiti prominently visible on Carrick’s Town Clock yesterday morning 19th of January 2022

Dear Editor,

I stopped yesterday morning, 19th of January 2022, at Carrick’s Town Clock to take a photograph showing all of the candles that had been lit by the people of the town in mourning for the loss of Ashling Murphy’s life.

During what is a deeply saddening week for our nation, I found it additionally sad to witness the sheer prominence, due to the mornings weather conditions, of the IRA Graffiti that has been ever present for decades within the surface of The Town Clock’s stonework.

Despite all of the ongoing expenses that have been invested within the streets of Carrick-on-Shannon during the past year and longer, why oh why is it that our Town Clock remains in such a shameful state?

I hope that the civic pride required to reach some form of satisfactory remedy to this situation will emerge in 2022. Especially in the times we have all been living through in the past two years or so. How can this ongoing situation be beneficial in any way shape or form to the emotional well-being of any of our townspeople, or for that of any visitors to Carrick-on-Shannon for that matter?

Sincerely,

Richard Patterson
